Single Cab, Extra Cab or Dual Cab? Planning a Ute From the Chassis Up

Rose RuckBy Rose RuckOctober 21, 2026

Choosing a ute used to be simple. You picked a brand, chose between petrol and diesel and drove away. Today buyers face a much more complex set of decisions. Cab configurations, tub or cab chassis, payload capacities, towing ratings, drivetrains and an enormous range of aftermarket accessories all influence how well the vehicle will suit its purpose. Getting these decisions right at the start avoids expensive changes later.

Here is how to approach planning a ute from the chassis up.

    Start With the Purpose

Be clear about how the ute will be used. Is it purely a work vehicle, a family car that also tows the camper on weekends, a touring vehicle for long trips or a combination? Will it carry heavy loads regularly, tow large trailers or venture off road?

Honest answers guide every decision that follows.

    Cab Configurations

Single cab utes offer the longest load area and are popular with tradies and farmers who need maximum tray space and rarely carry passengers. Extra cab, sometimes called space cab or king cab, models provide a small area behind the front seats for storage or occasional passengers, with a slightly shorter tray.

Dual cab utes seat five and are the most popular choice in Australia, balancing family practicality with load-carrying ability. The trade-off is a shorter load area.

    Tub or Cab Chassis

Utes come in two main body styles. Tub models have an integrated load box, which is convenient for daily driving and general use. Cab chassis models have a bare chassis behind the cab, allowing a tray or service body to be fitted.

Cab chassis offer greater flexibility. A flat tray provides a wider, more versatile load area than a tub, and it can be fitted with toolboxes, canopies, racks and other accessories.

    Payload and GVM

Payload, the weight a ute can carry including passengers and accessories, varies between models. Many dual cab utes have payloads around one tonne, but adding bull bars, trays, canopies, toolboxes, drawers and touring gear can consume much of that capacity before any cargo is loaded.

Check the gross vehicle mass and calculate payload carefully, considering everything you plan to fit and carry. Some owners have GVM upgrades certified to increase capacity, which must be done through approved processes.

    Towing Considerations

Many utes are rated to tow up to 3,500 kilograms, but these figures do not tell the whole story. Ball weight limits, gross combination mass and the weight of the loaded ute all affect what can be towed legally and safely. A heavily loaded ute may only be able to tow a fraction of its rated capacity.

    Designing the Rear

The area behind the cab is where a ute becomes truly useful. Planning Custom Ute Trays & Canopies as a combined system allows the tray dimensions, canopy layout, storage, water, power and access points to be designed together, so every component fits neatly and suits the owner’s work or travel needs without wasted space or unnecessary weight.

    Materials Matter

Aluminium trays and canopies are popular for their light weight and corrosion resistance, freeing up payload for gear. Steel offers toughness at the cost of extra weight. Composite materials are also used in some applications.

    Suspension Upgrades

Heavily loaded or touring utes often benefit from suspension upgrades that improve load-carrying, ride comfort and handling. Suspension must suit the actual weight carried, and modifications should comply with regulations and be fitted by professionals.

    Accessories in Order

Plan accessories in a logical order. Start with structural items such as trays, canopies and bull bars, then add storage, electrical systems, lighting and recovery gear. Fitting accessories in the wrong order can lead to rework and extra costs.

    Compliance and Insurance

Modifications must comply with state and territory rules, and some require engineering certification. Notify your insurer of modifications to ensure cover remains valid. Keep records of all modifications.

    Thinking About the Future

Consider how your needs may change. A young family may grow. A business may expand. Touring plans may evolve. Choosing a setup that can adapt, such as modular storage and canopies that can be removed or reconfigured, extends the usefulness of the vehicle.

    Test Before You Commit

If possible, hire or borrow a similar ute with a tray or canopy setup before buying. A weekend of real use, loading tools, packing camping gear or towing a trailer, reveals far more than a test drive around the block. Talk to owners of the same model about reliability, fuel use and how the vehicle behaves when loaded. Online owner groups are full of practical experience that can save you from expensive mistakes.

A Vehicle That Fits Your Life

A well-planned ute can be one of the most versatile vehicles on the road, handling work, family duties and adventures with equal ease. By starting with a clear purpose, understanding weights and designing the rear setup thoughtfully, owners can create a vehicle that truly fits their life.
