Celebratory drinks include sparkling wine. However, have you heard about the history and origin of sparkling wine? If you look back at its history, you will find innovations and the influence of different cultures.

    Wine in the ancient age

The earliest known alcoholic beverage dates around 5000 BC and is wine. Experts believe that the origin of the beverage is in places like Georgia and Persia. A little later, there was an emergence of sparkling wine. Many ancient Roman and Green writers mentioned sparkling wine in their writings.

Though people began to make sparkling wine early, it did not receive a warm welcome. At that time, people were not familiar with the bubbles appearing in the drink. These bubbles were just mysterious to them.

Sparkling wine: know the story of its birth

Sparkling wine entered the world of beverages more than 2,000 years ago. In ancient Greece, there was the first instance of wine with effervescence. At that time carbonated water obtained from natural springs is mixed with wine. This special blend was known as metric. Ancient Greek people used to have this drink at different social events.

However, this beverage also had a Roman version known as vinum titillum. Romans mixed carbonated water and still wine. The trend of effervescence in sparkling wine was found in other countries. For instance, Spain developed a particular technique for making wine.

Origin of a modern version of the sparkling wine

Although wine with effervescence was popular in many civilizations, modern sparkling wine took birth during the late 1600s. At that time, sparkling wine champagne was produced in the French region. Dom Pierre Pérignon, a monk, was associated with the discovery of the sparkling wine.

While working for an abbey, he was trying to refine the wine. He continued experimenting with various blends and grape species. In the cool climatic region of France, champagne was produced as the most refreshing wine. Of course, it had a unique effervescence that gained the attention of wine enthusiasts.

    Champagne in the European region

Champagne started spreading its fame across Europe. Within a short period, it became a symbol of refinement and luxury. French monarchs were the first consumers of this sparkling wine. When the court hosted any grand event, champagne was the first choice for celebration.

A legend revealed that Madame de Pompadour accepted champagne as the best wine for the King’s court. At that time, only upper-class people consumed wine. For instance, champagne was the most common drink for corrosions and royal weddings.

Especially in the northern region of Europe, champagne has gained significant popularity. People in Spain also enjoyed Cava as the best sparkling wine. They use Methode Champenoise for making wine.

Champagne and sparkling wine had a glorious history. They symbolise joy and status on different occasions. However, you may also try out regional sparkling wines to have a refreshing taste.
