As a result, heme iron can be absorbed at a rate of about 15-35%, while non-heme iron is absorbed at a much lower rate of 2-20%.     Iron deficiency is the most common nutritional deficiency worldwide and a leading cause of anemia, a condition characterized by low levels of hemoglobin in the blood.
