Does Endobronchial ultrasound helps to detect early lung diseases?

Rose RuckBy Rose RuckMarch 4, 2024

Lung diseases are some of the most common diseases that people suffer from, not only in India but all across the globe. These can be a result of smoking, the rising consumption of vapes by youngsters, the increasing pollution levels in metropolitan cities, and so on. Our lungs are a very complex machinery, even though they seem simple.  There are numerous contractions done every hour that lead to a supply of oxygen in the body for it to function. It would not be wrong to say that every breath of ours is dependent on our lungs, literally.

So why do we often tend to neglect such an important organ? The slightest discomfort and signs of illnesses related to the lungs must not be ignored. This is where the Pulmonology branch of medical sciences plays its part. Continue reading to gain more awareness of the steps to take and how to take care of your lungs.

    The Advancement of Pulmonology Today

The said medical branch of Pulmonology has advanced to a great extent today. A simple scanning of your lungs can predict upcoming infections in the lungs, which was not possible earlier. It is called the Endobronchial ultrasound.

Endobronchial ultrasound or EBUS bronchoscopy is a medical procedure used to cure different kinds of lung disorders, such as inflammation, allergies, infections, or even cancer in the worst cases. It is performed by a pulmonologist, and it uses a flexible tube that enters your body through your mouth, reaches your windpipe, and then to the lungs. The endobronchial ultrasound scope has a video camera attached to it, along with an ultrasound probe attached to create local images of the inside of your lungs and surrounding lymph nodes. This procedure helps to accurately locate and evaluate areas seen on X-rays or scans that need to be looked at closely by your doctor. There is a reason why this ultrasound is considered a boon to detect any lung disease at the early stages, so it can prevent any serious complications and medical issues later.

What to Expect after the EBUS bronchoscopy

There can be some signs of discomfort, but there is nothing to worry about as these last only a few days and vary from person to person. These normal after-effects can include:

Coughing: It can last for a couple of days and will subside eventually and has nothing to worry about. It only lasts till the local anesthesia lasts in the body.

Bleeding: It can occur from the spots where samples have been taken and is completely normal. You will be advised to take voice rest and avoid eating anything that is harsh on your throat.

Breathlessness: It is a rare effect that is temporary, and only some patients experience it due to the disruption in the voice box. And some patients might not experience this at all.

Sedative State: Only a few patients can feel the lasting effects of sedation and get dozy. At the same time, some people might be all right in a matter of a few hours. Again, this is not a lasting effect and is completely normal.

FAQ: Are there any risks associated with Endobronchial ultrasound?

EBUS bronchoscopy is a very safe procedure but, as with any medical procedure, there is a small risk of difficulties present. This can include slight infection after the procedure, bleeding, low oxygen levels during or after the procedure, and so on. All these complications can be handled by your doctor on the spot, so there is nothing to worry about. Remember to inform your doctor if you have had trouble with anesthesia or sedation medications in the past or if there is any other health condition you are suffering from.

    In Conclusion!

The results of your test are generated a couple of days after the samples are taken. Meanwhile, you need not stress over the outcome and take care of your throat. Anything negative in the reports can be discussed and treated.

It is always advised to stay away from any sort of things that are harmful to the lungs, such as smoking, vaping, and so on. We cannot avoid the pollution in cities but can always avoid self-inflicted health issues occurring from our lifestyle and choices.
